Actually, Dark Dungeons is based on the Rules Cyclopedia and the Wrath of the Immortals box set. What Dark Dungeons does do is correct some of the common problems found within the Rules Cyclopedia. DD does not water down Weapon Mastery, but instead clarifies it with easy to understand charts. Other common problematic rules were fixed and included.
The best thing is that with DD, all of your older, Basic D&D material works with it flawlessly.
